I began my first sole proprietorship when I was seven. I started a lemonade stand in front of our house in an urban Connecticut city. It was a hot summer, and I had a big green cooler and had invested in some frozen lemonade concentrate, paper cups and a bag of ice. Where were all my customers? I knew I had something that every tired Mom or Dad wanted when they got off the bus from work, but I was not attracting customers. Why? Location, Location, Location. Our house was in the middle of the block, the bus stopped at the corners on either end of our block. After a day of market research, and drinking a lot of lemonade myself, I made one of the shrewdest decisions of my professional life. I rented (for twenty-five cents) my brothers red Radio Flyer wagon and loaded my lemonade stand onto it and moved my booth.
I saw hot, tired people getting off the bus 100 yards away from me in both directions, and walking up their sidewalks away from me, to their homes. This was 1967, most men were in suits, women in stockings and heels, they were hot, tired and thirsty. Everyone took the bus home in…
